Maxwell's Silver Hammer (The Beatles)...

Here's another cartoon for you folks!
This time it is a very good one I believe.
I was always curious what is the meaning of the lyrics in this song, but I was too bored to look for it.
Well, now I know! :P (Not that it makes any sense, the lyrics are totally crazy!)
I made a small research for this song, and here's what I found: This is a Paul Mc Cartney's song, and except him, none of the other 3 Beatles liked it. It was written dueing the period that Mc Cartney was all the time "high" and he was trying psychedelic drugs, so that explains the crazy lyrics in a way...
Anyway, here is the song Maxwell's Silver Hammer by The Beatles in a cartoon.
Enjoy it! :)

"The Killing" Season 2...

Well, this post surely delayed a lot!
The season 2 started on 1st of April but the problem was that it started together with "The Game of Thrones", and of course I chose to watch GoT first...
Now, all the things I wrote about the 1st season in a previous post, are also here. (If you haven't read it or you don't remember you can go at the start of this blog and read it if you want). (In order not to search a lot, just choose Movies-TV, and it will show you only the posts about the TV series I have posted).
All these twists of the plot, the surprising events etc, are in season 2 as well. But the problem is that they are not new anymore. We have seen the same things again in the first season, so now are less surprising, and less interesting.
The original Danish series consists of 20 episodes. This version is 26. So we have 6 episodes more, and with an estimate time of about 45 minutes per episode, makes about 4.5 hours of extra time that has been added to the story. This is a lot!
Anyway, my opinion is that 2nd season is more boring, and less surprising than the first one. As an example I will say this: I watched the 13 episodes of the 1st season, in about 4-5 days.
The 13 episodes of this 2nd season, took me about 2.5 weeks! And in the end I was really waiting to finish, just to be able to see what will happen at end of the story.
I'm not saying that it's a bad series. I'm saying that after the first season I was expecting something more, and it never delivered...
But as a sum of the 2 seasons I think is worth seeing it.
This is my opinion at least...

Metallica & Ozzy Live...

I found this video some time ago, and I thought of sharing it with you.
A few days ago it was Ozzy's & friends concert in Athens. Originally it was Black Sabbath's, but since Tony Iommi is facing serious health problems, the whole tour was canceled. Instead Ozzy appeared on the stage together with Geezer Butler and some "friends", in order to give for everybody there a crazy Rock concert. A friend of mine that was there that night promised a review.
If he will write it, I will post it here ASAP.
But until then, here is a video for you from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a few years back.
Ozzy is on stage with Metallica, and together they are performing a couple of very famous songs... ;)
Yes, maybe he is old, maybe his voice is not like it was before, but he is Ozzy!
And he is together with Metallica on the same stage!
So, I hope you will enjoy this one... :)

LEMMY: White Line Fever

Another book presentation here for you folks.
After reading Ozzy's book, I wanted to sneak into Lemmy's life as well, so I started reading this book.
But Lemmy is not Ozzy. Lemmy is the tough guy, whilst Ozzy is the clown of Rock n Roll. And that's the way this book is written. 'White Line Fever' is written in a more serious way, describing Lemmy's life from his early days, (the Hawkwind years), and of course the Motorhead years.
The book is filled with alcohol, drugs of many kinds, and sex. These are mixed with the crazy world of Rock n Roll, musicians, agents, record companies, and all these together are creating a highly explosive mixture!
As I mentioned in the presentation of Ozzy's book, at many points I was crying from laughter! This did not happened here. Everything is writen in a more serious way, more objectively, and for all the things that happened in Lemmy's life, is for the reader to decide if he/she likes them or not. Of course there are some funny parts as well, but in general the book is serious enough.
It is a very intresting and easy going book to read, (assuming that the reader is interested in Lemmy's life of course), but towards the end I found it a bit boring. But up to 1980's is very good and enjoyable.
I will not recommend it to everyone as I did with Ozzy's book, that's for sure! But for the ones that knows and respect Lemmy, then this book is a 'must'! Let's not forget that Mr.Killminster is one of the biggest and most authentic figures in the Rock n Roll world...

Greatest Rock albums of all times Part. 16

                                       LOVE: FOREVER CHANGES
I know that maybe some of you will disagree with this, but I truly believe that this album deserves a place in the best Rock albums of all times!
Let's see some info about it...
"Forever Changes" was released in November 1967 and it was Love's third album. Upon its release it wasn't significantly successful, but in the years to come it will be recognized as one of the finest albums that came out during the "Summer of Love". It reached No.24 in the UK album charts, but failed to enter into the Hot 100 album charts in the USA. But a few years later it would be praised both from critics and music magazines, and on many occasions the word 'masterpiece' would be used when it comes to this album. The Rolling Stone magazine gave 5/5 stars, whilst Mojo magazine named it "as the second greatest psychedelic album of all times". Also in Virgin's "All time Top-1000 albums catalog" published in 1998 it writes: "For anybody not familiar with this record it is unconditionally recommended as one of the greatest albums ever made".
The title of the album came from a story that a friend of Arthur Lee told him once. (Arthur Lee was the definite leader of the band). When he was breaking up with his long-time girlfriend, she told him "You said you would love me forever!" and he replied "Well, forever changes". Arthur Lee said that since the band's name was Love, the original full title would be "Love Forever Changes".
At first the album meant to be produced by Bruce Botnick and Neil Young, but Young bowed out due his commitments to Buffalo Springfield. So Arthur Lee took his place in the production.
The album had the support of a full orchestra with strings and horns, something unusual in the psychedelic scene of the '60's, but that was something that was on Arthur Lee's mind from the start.
The album opens with the song that meant to be one of the most famous songs in Rock, and for sure Love's biggest hit through the years. This is no other than "Alone again or". In the years to come many artists and bands will made cover versions of this song; with the most famous being the ones by UFO and Calexico.
Most of the songs in the album are romantic and melancholic melodies, and the lyrics are in many occasions referring to personal every day life experience. For example, in  the opening song of the B side "Between Clark and Hilldale" Arthur Lee sings "Here they will always play my songs". The song refers to the famous club Whisky a Go Go (8901 Sunset Boulevard) that was located on the strip between the streets Clark and Hilldale.
Closing this, it is worth mentioning that in Love's double cd compilation released in 1995, the album "Forever Changes" is included in its entirety.

In the following video you can listen to the song "Maybe the People Would Be the Tımes or Between Clark and Hilldale" (What a title eh?)

THE PROGRESSIVE ROCK ENCYCLOPEDIA: A (Part.2)

A Part.2

 ARENA
They were founded in 1994 by Clive Nolan on keyboards (ex-Pentragon), and Mick Pointer on drums. (The former drummer of Marillion). Many members have come and go through the years, but these two are the only ones who still remain since day one.
The band is considered as one of the big names in the neo-prog scene. They have released 7 studio albums so far, and a couple 'live' ones.
In the following video you can watch them perform live...

ASH RA TEMPEL
The group was founded in 1970 by M.Gottschling, K.Schulze and H.Enke. K.Schulze has been a member to Tangerine Dream before joining Ash Ra Tempel.
Their music is considered mainly as Space-Rock with many psychedelic influences.
Their debut self titled album was released in 1971. After this album K.Schulze quit the band for a solo career.
In 1972 they release 'Schwingungen' and a few months later 'Seven up'. (With Timothy Leary).
(Timothy Leary was a very known psychologist/writer and the 'guru' of psychedelic drugs).
Their first albums had one long song on each side of the record. Usually one atmospheric and dramatic, and one more powerful. Most of their songs are instrumental, because the German language was not so popular in Rock music, and they didn't want to use English.
After the first albums, they changed their name to Astra and they released a couple more studio albums and a soundtrack, before they disbanded in 1976.
The band reunited in 2000 and recorded one album named 'Friendship'. In this album K.Schulze is also included as member of the band again.
In the following video you can listen to the song "Schizo"...

ASTRA
Astra is a new band coming from San Diego, California.
The were founded in 2001 under the name 'Silver Sunshine', but they changed it to 'Astra' in 2006.
Their sound is based on the Prog-Rock bands of the '70's played in a more modern way though.
They have released 2 albums so far. Their debut is 'The Weirding' and it was released in 2009, and their second is 'The Black Chord' that was released this year.
It is a very interesting band, and for sure they deserve some attention...
In the following video you can listen to the song 'The Weirding'...

AUDIENCE
Audience was an English band that was formed in 1969.
They were lucky enough to gain attention almost immediately. Within the first few months found a manager, a club to play in a regular basis, and a recording contract with Polydor. They released their self-titled album the same year. Their style was Progressive and the characteristic in their sound was the use of saxophone.
They agreed with Polydor to release the song 'Too late I'm gone' as single, but the company cancelled it.
The band was very displeased in general with Polydor, and after many incidents, (at some time they escape to Switzerland in hiding). Luckily, the director of Charisma records saw them performing live as an opening act for Led Zeppelin and offered them a contract. (Charisma records was the best and biggest company for Progressive Rock in these days).
They released 3 albums in total with Charisma, on 1970, 1971 and 1972.
In the early 1972, the band's members were disappointed from the low sales of their albums and tired from the endless live performances, so after a U.S tour with Rod Stewart & The Faces two of the members quitted the band, leaving an unfinished record in the studio.
The remaining two members found 2 new mucisians, and with the help of The Rolling Stones finished the record. This would be the last studio album they will ever record. After the release of the album in 1972, the band went back on the road to perform live. But this new line up never worked well together, and a few months later they were disbanded.
On 2004 they made a reunion, followed up by a long tour mainly in Germany Italy, Canada and Uk.
The result of this tour was a live album that was released in 2005.
And there are no news about Audience since then...

THE PROGRESSIVE ROCK ENCYCLOPEDIA: A

   A. (Part 1)

AGITATION FREE.
It was a German experimental Krautrock band, formed in 1967. Their first name was 'Agitation', a name they chose randomly from a dictionary. Later they changed their name to 'Agitation Free' which means 'Free Concert'. They took this idea after a panel they saw in the entrance of a free concert in the early 1970.
In the years between 1967 - 1970 they were experimenting with sounds and music styles, changing the band's members often enough.
Their debut album was released in 1972 and it was called 'Malesch'. The sound and style of this album is inspired by a travel they made through Greece, Cyprus but mostly Egypt.
Their music here consists of a mixture of space rock with psychedelic sounds, ethnic influences, and the heavy use of organ as their 'trade mark'. The whole project is very experimental. Later the same year they performed at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The next year (1973), they released their second album under the name '2nd'. Although this album is more 'European' orientated, among the instruments which have been used you can find 'bouzouki'.
On 1974 the band splits up, and in the following years they will make a few reunions and will release a few more albums.

    AKKERMAN JAN
Jan Akkerman is a Dutch guitarist born in Amsterdam. He started playing guitar at the age of 5, and he released his first single at the age of 14. At the end of '60's he met with Thijs Van Leer and
together they formed the band 'Focus'. With Focus they explored the Prog-Rock paths scoring a few singles before his departure in 1976. As a musician he was constantly experimenting with new equipment and guitars. His guitar sound was very characteristic, with a very smooth flute-like sound.
He had a big interest in Medieval and Renaissance music culture, and he tried for the first time to add Lute in a Rock band.
In 1973 he was voted as 'Best guitarist in the world' by the readers of Melody Maker magazine.
Because of his very big fame as a guitar player he teamed up with a guitar manufacturing company in order to release his first 'signature' guitar models.
From 1976 and onwards he released many records as a solo artist, and played as a session guitarist alongside famous musicians such as: Alan Price, Peter Banks, Paco De Lucia and B.B King.
In 1985 he tried a Focus reunion, but it was not successful.
As a musician he is still active releasing new albums every now and then...

AMON DUUL: I-II & UK
Here you wıll read the weird and interesting story of the German band Amon Duul.
Their story starts in Munich in the year 1967. At the start, Amon Duul wasn't exactly a band. They were a political/artistic commune, and the band was a part of it. That means there were no members in this band. Members were all the people in this commune helping according to their knowledge. Their declaration was: 'We are eleven adults and two children which we gathered to make all kind of expressions, also musical'.
The Amon Duul commune was involving more and more with the politics and at some point they were in close terms with the 'Red Army Faction'. (In other words with the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group).
In 1968 they were offered a  record contract, and at this point the band split up. Half of the members claimed that Amon Duul was never a music band, therefore they should continue concentrating on their political beliefs and actions, while the other half saw it as an opportunity to change their way for good.
So they split up, and Amon Duul II were formed.
Their first album 'Phallus Dei' (God's penis) released in 1969 and it was totally experimental. At that point the band had 2 drummers in their ranks as members. With the release of the album they started playing live in every possible place, touring all over Germany and usually staying in other communes. (Like the famous commune 1 in Berlin). They also played a couple of times with Tangerine Dream.
Their second album 'Yeti' (1970) was more Rock orientated, whilst their third one 'Tanz der Lemminge' (1971) was based on 4 extended Prog-Rock suites. After this album their bassist quit the band, and travel to England to join 'Hawkwind'.
For the rest of the '70's they continued traveling and performing live a lot, and releasing albums almost every year. They disbanded in 1981.
One year later another group with the name Amon Duul appeared, in England this time.
That's because 2 ex-members of Amon Duul II decided to reform the band, and with the addition of Guy Evans in drums (ex-Van Der Graaf Generator), they released 4 records in total. In the meantime their name changed to Amon Duul (UK), in order to avoid misunderstandings.
Those records failed to succeed, so they disbanded in the end of '80's.

Didim-Bodrum-Kos and back...

This week I had to travel to the Greek island of Kos in order to arrange a few things, and I decided to make it more interesting and enjoyable. So together with my wife we made a small  travel and mixed the jobs that had to be done with some fun.
We left Didim with the bus at afternoon, and 2 hours later we reached at the beautiful city of Bodrum that lies on the Aegean sea. From there we would pass the next morning to Kos.
Found a (not so nice, but cheap) hotel and we headed out to explore the city.
It was already late afternoon, the sun was setting, and we found ourselves making rounds at the area around the seafront. It was very nice. Many small roads filled with people, hundreds small shops full of colors, and nice smells coming from everywhere around.
After our dinner, we found a nice cafe/bar on the main beach, and we enjoyed our drinks sitting at a table exactly next to the sea, and watching the magnificent view of the huge castle that was lighted for the night. It was a very relaxing and beautiful feeling.
The next day we took the small ferry from Bodrum to Kos island, and one hour later we were in Greece.
Kos is a beautiful island, very touristic, and every time we are there we usually have a nice time.
The first thing we did it was to find a nice cafeteria and enjoy a great coffee! :)
We did many of the things we had to, and then we decided to visit the biggest ancient site of the island, called 'Asklepeion'. It was dedicated to Asklipios son of Apollo, the protector of medicine and health in the ancient Greece. Many significant people worked there, but the most important and famous was Hippocrates 'the father of medicine'.
The area is big and very impressive. It is at a cliff that offers a great view of the island, but it is not suggested for days with unbearable heat. Unfortunately it was close to noon, and the heat was exhausting! So we made our visit shorter, and left quite fast.
Next we had to go to the other side of the island in the village of Kefalos, in order to finish with the things we had to do. Kefalos is a touristic village, and it is situated in a small gulf and has a very beautiful seaside. In the middle of the gulf, there is a tiny island with a small chapel on it dedicated to Saint Nicolas.
Beautiful place as well. There we enjoyed some Greek foods that we both had missed a lot, and then we took the way back home.
The only remarkable incident of our way back was that the small ferry we were on, when it was trying to reach Bodrum port had a crash with a yaght that was there already. It was a good crash! The ferry didn't seem to suffer any serious damage, but the yaught's left side was heavily damaged! It was the first time I was present on a boat when it crashes another boat, and I must say it was an interesting experience!
Finally this trip proved to be a nice very small holiday. We did all the things that had to be done, but at the same time we had some fun as well.
Now I'm back to Didim, continuing my everyday life routine as before...

The pictures: On the 2 first pictures you can see a small cafe on the beach of Bodrum (not the one we sat though), and the castle at night. In the next 2 you can see a part of Asklepeion, and the tiny island in the gulf of Kefalos in Kos...
