             ERIC CLAPTON: Rainbow Concert (1973)
'Rainbow Concert' was a concert organized by Pete Townshend in order to "celebrate" Eric Clapton's comeback in the music business, after 2 years of inactivity, during which he was trying to overcome his heroin addiction. The concert took place at the legendary Rainbow Theater in London on the 13th of January 1973. Rainbow theater was very famous in the 60's and the '70's, and many bands appeared there, such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull and Queen.
Pete Townshed gathered a bunch of great musicians to perform together with Eric Clapton on stage, and altogether they played some of Clapton's songs mixed with cover versions by other Rock bands or artists.
I dare to say that the versions of the songs included in this album are not the greatest ones ever recorded, but it really doesn't matter. The importance here, lies in the gathering of all those great musicians, who joined Eric Clapton on stage, in order to celebrate with him his comeback in music, and the fact that he overcame his drug problem.
Now let's see who were the musicians who participated in that concert. Take a look at the names:
Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend (The Who), Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones), Rick Grech (Traffic & Blind Faith), Steve Winwood (Traffic) and Jim Capaldi (Traffic).
In the original 1973 print, the album was included only 6 songs, and had a total running time of almost 35 minutes. In 1995 a new remastered edition was released, including 14 songs in total, with a running time of almost 74 minutes.
Speaking for myself, I own the original vinyl version, which I bought many, many years ago, and the remastered one as well, in MP3.
I totally recommend this album to all the fans of Rock music, because this is a piece of history.
Here you can take a look at the album's songlist:
