Books: Graham Masterton: A Terrible Beauty

As I have mentioned in a couple of posts already, the last two weeks I went to an off-season Holidays.
One of the things I really enjoy when I'm on my holidays is to relax and read a couple of books in peace and quite. This time I read only one, but boy! It was a good one!
Graham Masterton is one of my most beloved horror writers and I had read almost all of his books but not this one...
So I chose 'A Terrible Beauty' to be my holiday reading companion, and I really enjoyed it!
From the first pages the book absorbs the reader, transferring him to the cloudy and gloomy countryside of Cork in Ireland, where a very old mass murder was discovered. As a usual happening in almost all of Graham Masterton's books, the atmosphere and the suspense are present from the start, and as the reader continues reading finds it really very hard to stop, and that is something which happened to me as well. I was really trying to stop reading in order not to finish the book in one day! (It finally took me 3 days).
I don't really want to reveal anything of the plot, and for that reason I will just put here a copy of the summary which you can find on the back page of the book:

"There are things I need to know..."
On a farm in southern Ireland, the dismembered bones of eleven women are found in a common grave, buried eight decades ago. Detective Superintendent Katie Maguire is used to bloodshed, but this ivory litter of human remains is unimaginable butchery.
"Of other worlds apart from this..."
In isolated darkness not far away, an American tourist is at the mercy of a serial killer. His tools are a boning knife, twine, and a doll fashioned from nails and fishhooks. The murder of his victims is second only to the pleasure of their pain.
"Darker places inhabited by evil monstrosities..."
As an eighty-year-old mystery unfolds, so does a modern-day ritual that's marked Katie Maguire as its next victim. For what happened once in this small picturesque village is happening again. It's more than a series of horrifying crimes. It's tradition.
"Take me there."

I'm sure the people who enjoy good horror stories will find this book excellent!

COURSERA: Free online lessons...

Hello all!
I haven't been able to write these days because I'm really busy.
But there is something I should have mentioned sometime ago, and it's about the online lessons I'm taking in Coursera.
Coursera is an organization which is co-operating with many Universities, and is offering online lessons for free on many subjects. You can choose an easy and usually pleasant class or a harder one. It's up to you actually. There are hundreds of lessons going on now, and every now and then new ones are starting.
I learned about Coursera from a friend who is taking classes for over a year now. Since I had no idea how it was working, so I thought of starting with something easy. So my first class was 'History of Rock Part.1', thinking also that probably I don't have to study as much, because I'm dealing with Rock music almost 30 years now, and I'm very familiar with the subject. Well, I was very wrong! hehehehe
The University which offers these classes is the University of Rochester based in New York, and the teacher is Professor John Covach. I have to say he is giving a very interesting, informative and
pleasant class.
And here's how the whole system is working: Every class has a length of some weeks. (F.e History of Rock Part,1 was 7 weeks long). On every week the university is uploading some video lectures which you can download or watch online. Now, depends on the kind of class there is a possibility you might have some homework to do, or not. Every one or two weeks there is a test you have to take, and at the end of the course sometimes an overall test. There are also forums available with discussion groups, study groups etc... In general the whole thing is organized and pleasant.
Speaking for myself, I just reached the 7th and last week of the course, and now it's the time to take the final exam, and then decide if I want to continue with part.2 or not.
Concluding this post I have to say that I strongly recommend Coursera to everybody who might be interested in learning something new, even just for fun like me. And don't forget it's completely free!
If you want to take a look at the classes the subjects etc, here is the link: https://www.coursera.org/
Thanks for reading! :)

LOTRO 6th Birthday's fan made video...

This video is espesially made by my wife for the celebrations of the 6th birthday of LOTRO.
(Lord Of The Rings Online).
It was a very demanding and tiring job, but I believe the result is excellent!
If you want take a look at the video, and if you like it please promote by sharing it.
Thank you in advance! :)
P.S: If you want you can set it in HD, it's delaying the loading a bit, but it is far better...

Anthony A. Goodman: The Shadow of God

This is a book I read since sometime ago, and I always wanted to write a post about it.
The book is a novel, but it is based on real historical events.
The story is about the siege of the fortified city of Rhodes from the huge army of Suleiman.
And here you can read a small preview of this wonderful book:
[The year is 1522. Two great leaders, twenty-five-year-old Suleiman the Magnificent, the absolute ruler of the mighty Ottoman Empire, and Philippe de L'Isle Adam, the grisly, fifty-eight-year-old Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, come to war on the Greek island of Rhodes. For 145 days, Philippe and 500 European Knights fight to protect their fortressed city and withstand an assault of nearly 200,000 men from Suleiman's army, in a battle that becomes the historic hallmark for siege warfare.
Authentic in all its historical detail, The Shadow of God evokes a seismic clash of cultures: Muslim versus Christian, the Ottoman Empire versus the last remaining Knights of the Crusades and, most important, two of the most powerful men of their time. Embedded in this fictional account is the secret marriage of a lovely Jewish nurse to her Christian French Knight, as well as the forbidden love of the Grand Master for the beautiful Helene. An epic of bravery and courage, The Shadow of God weaves a tapestry of beauty, terror and triumph set in a forgotten time of brutality and courage, loyalty and honor].
It is a book I strongly recommend to all those who enjoy reading Historical Novels, and are intrigued by mighty battles.

Four Tanks & a Healer...

Good morning! :)
Today I will post something very different.
Yesterday I discovered in YT this cartoon that is a parody of the Fantasy on-line games.
In the description says 'Lotro parody' (Lord Of The Rings Online), but I don't agree.
Being a player in Lotro for 4 years now, I see some elements from this game in the cartoon, but in general I think it's a parody of all the Fantasy games.
I was able to find only 2 episodes, (I don't think there are more so far), and I'm posting them here.
I'm sure that the people who are (or were) involved with some on-line game will find these episodes very funny! I hope you will like them folks! :)

The Beatles Cartoon: Strawberry Fields Forever

Here is a really very old cartoon I found, and I wanted to share it with all of you.
It is an episode from the Beatles cartoon series that were shown in the English TV (I guess) for a couple of years. Ok, the graphics are kind of lame, but we are talking about a cartoon more than 40 years old!
The song is the famous 'Strawberry Fields forever', and it starts at about 1:35.
If you don't like the cartoon, enjoy the song at least... ;)

CONCERNING HOBBIT(S)… The alternative video & more…

After the great success of the trilogy ‘The Lord of the Rings’ there had been a lot of conversations about what should be the next movie in the world of J.R.R Tolkien. Many of us said that the most logical would be to make ‘The Hobbit’,  although a few others were hoping for ‘The Silmarillion’. (Knowing now Peter Jackson’s point of view on the subject, filming the Silmarillion is something impossible! If Lord of the Rings was 3 movies, then they will have to film at least 5 movies to cover Silmarillion!)
But that’s not our subject today. When I heard that ‘The Hobbit’ was to become a movie, and especially at the hands of Peter Jackson, I became very happy. A little later when I heard that they would film it in 2 movies, I started to worry. A few days ago I read that Peter Jackson himself stated that finally ‘The Hobbit’ will be 3 movies! There I was panicked! 3 movies! The Hobbit? How is this possible?
All of you that already know the book, I’m sure you have the same feelings like me. For the ones that are not familiar with the book let me give you an example.
Let’s try very simple mathematics here: The Lord of the Rings was written as a trilogy by Tolkien. There are 3 books with about 1000+ pages altogether. So, each of the 3 films dealt with each one of the books. That means that each fılm covered about 300-350 pages. (Plus the extras that P.Jackson fitted in) (Some were very good, some others not).
But’ The Hobbit’ is nothing like that! Nothing! Many people I know that read ‘The Hobbit’ after reading ‘The Lord of the Rings’, were complaining that they found it a bit childish. And they have right. Because ‘The Hobbit’ is a chıld’s book! It was written in a very simple way, and it was meant for children.  Now, the whole book is 300 pages more or less. So, with the simple mathematics we used before, means that each film will cover about 100 pages. How is that even possible?
It will be possible when P.Jackson put in the films his own ideas and the new parts of the plot that I’m sure he is preparing right now. First of all, many characters that are not even mentioned in the book will be part of the movies. Legolas and Galadriel for example.
But under these circumstances, it will be better (and more honest) not to name these movies ‘The Hobbit’. They can find some other altrenative name, like ‘Peter Jackson’s Hobbit’, or The Hobbit – The P.Jackson’s version, etc etc…  hahahah …
Don’t get me wrong here, I really loved The Lord of the Rings movies, and I really thank P.Jackson for what he achieved! But this thing he’s trying to do now, I don’t know…
Of course it’s all about the money! And I agree. Money is very important in show business. But everything has its limits, don’t you think?
Speaking for myself, I will go (of course) to watch the movies, but I will go prepared that I will not see ‘The Hobbit’, the book I first read when I was 10 years old and grew up with! (Until the age of 15-16 when I discovered ‘The Lord of the Rings’). I will see a movie that will contain inside some parts of ‘The Hobbit’ among hundreds of other things…
But enough with the serious talk. Let’s finish this post in a funny way.
I discovered this video sometime ago, and I think it is super!
It needs an update, because it was made in the period  when everybody knew that the Hobbit would be 2 movies. It’s an ‘alternative’ trailer for the movie. Please watch it carefully, and pay attention to the lyrics of the song! Its hilarious!
Enjoy it! hehehe

Maxwell's Silver Hammer (The Beatles)...

Here's another cartoon for you folks!
This time it is a very good one I believe.
I was always curious what is the meaning of the lyrics in this song, but I was too bored to look for it.
Well, now I know! :P (Not that it makes any sense, the lyrics are totally crazy!)
I made a small research for this song, and here's what I found: This is a Paul Mc Cartney's song, and except him, none of the other 3 Beatles liked it. It was written dueing the period that Mc Cartney was all the time "high" and he was trying psychedelic drugs, so that explains the crazy lyrics in a way...
Anyway, here is the song Maxwell's Silver Hammer by The Beatles in a cartoon.
Enjoy it! :)

LEMMY: White Line Fever

Another book presentation here for you folks.
After reading Ozzy's book, I wanted to sneak into Lemmy's life as well, so I started reading this book.
But Lemmy is not Ozzy. Lemmy is the tough guy, whilst Ozzy is the clown of Rock n Roll. And that's the way this book is written. 'White Line Fever' is written in a more serious way, describing Lemmy's life from his early days, (the Hawkwind years), and of course the Motorhead years.
The book is filled with alcohol, drugs of many kinds, and sex. These are mixed with the crazy world of Rock n Roll, musicians, agents, record companies, and all these together are creating a highly explosive mixture!
As I mentioned in the presentation of Ozzy's book, at many points I was crying from laughter! This did not happened here. Everything is writen in a more serious way, more objectively, and for all the things that happened in Lemmy's life, is for the reader to decide if he/she likes them or not. Of course there are some funny parts as well, but in general the book is serious enough.
It is a very intresting and easy going book to read, (assuming that the reader is interested in Lemmy's life of course), but towards the end I found it a bit boring. But up to 1980's is very good and enjoyable.
I will not recommend it to everyone as I did with Ozzy's book, that's for sure! But for the ones that knows and respect Lemmy, then this book is a 'must'! Let's not forget that Mr.Killminster is one of the biggest and most authentic figures in the Rock n Roll world...

The Beatle babies...

One day as I was surfing on YouTube, I found this video.
I thought it was sweet and kind of funny, so I download it and I'm posting it here to share it with you.
The graphics are kind of lame, but that's what makes it funny I think.
Specially dedicated to the fans of The Beatles...
 Enjoy the Beatle babies! :)

Congratulations to the Greek National Team!

Greek National team passed to the quarter semi-finals!
This came as a big surprise actually, especially if you consider the team we beat last night and we have thrown out (Russia). And also if anyone had seen the other two previous games of Greece, and the points of the group until this last game.
The team was struggling to play some descent football, they were unlucky in some occasions, and let's face it, the referees are not so much fond of us...
But despite all these, in this last and most crucial game Greek team played with heart and guts, and managed to beat the Russian team and pass to the next round.
As I wrote in a post a few days ago, if our team pass to the next round I will be pleased. And I am!
In the next round we will be facing Germany most probably. Eh, there you can't ask for many things.
But in football you can never know, right? So let's wait for the 22nd of June, and we'll find out then...
A big Bravo to this team that despite all the problems, struggled and suceeded to pass from the group stage, and made all Greeks happy even if it was for 2 hours!
Thank you guys, you made us all very proud! Again! :)

It's EURO time!

   Hello everybody!
Today is a big day for the Football fans all over Europe.
Today starts 'Euro 2012' in the stadiums of Poland and Ukraine. That means 2-3 weeks full of football!
Great stuff! hehehe.
I want to wish good luck to all the teams that are participating, but mostly to the Greek team, that today in the premiere is playing against one of the host teams, Poland.
Many of you may remember what happened 8 years ago in Euro 2004 in Portugal, when Greece won the contest shocking the whole Europe. (For the ones that don't remember, Greece played in the premier against the host team of Portugal, won 2-1, and in the final we played again with Portugal, we beat them 1-0 and we won the Euro!) Well, this happened once and probably will never happen again.
But I'm hoping that the Greek team will play some decent football, and maybe pass to the next round.
After all, the whole Greece needs something to feel happy about in these very difficult times that we are facing.
So, good luck Greece! :)

Take a look at the video about Greece's crazy journey until the final and the victory! :)

Books: I Am OZZY

This time I will not write about records, but I will present a book which I believe everyone should read at some time! And I don't mean only Black Sabbath fans, I mean everybody!
'I Am Ozzy' is the autobiography of John Michael Osbourne (or just Ozzy), and it is co-written by Ozzy himself and Chris Ayers. (It is widely known that Ozzy has a dyslexia problem).
The book is 416 pages long, begins with his childhood,  then the Black Sabbath period, continuing with his solo career years, and it reaches up to 4-5 years back from now.
Upon it's release it received very good critics and made massive sales everywhere. It was praised by its readers, and has a rating of 4.6/5 in amazon boostore.
And why? Because it is a very enjoyable book to read! It is written in a light style with lots of humour and describes many serious incidents from Ozzy's life in a very funny way. Especially until the end of Black Sabbath's era it is hillarious! Of course as you can easily understand the pages of the book are filled with alcohol and drugs of any kind. But again, all these are described in such a funny way that you will find yourself laughing like crazy on many occasions.
I started reading this book mainly out of curiosity, but I have to say that at some point it was difficult to leave it aside and continue reading it the next day. So, I finished it in 3-4 days and I really really enjoyed it!
For all these reasons I just mentioned, I decided to make a small presentation here, and I really hope that some of you will read it and find it nice and interesting like I did.

The number of the Beast animated parody

All those who are Iron Maiden fans or Heavy Metal fans in general, I believe they will find the follwing video interesting and funny.
I discovered it sometime ago, while I was surfing in You Tube, and now is a good time to share it with you... :)
It is nothing special really, but it's nice and fun to watch.
