GFreedom's Juke Box Nο.108

Hello everybody!
As I'm usualy doing on Saturdays here I am once more in order to write down the songs I've chosen as my best ones for this week.
During this week I've listen to losts of music, not only because I was preparing the playlist for tomorrow's Prog & Roll, but also for an event I'm preparing for December.
Once more it was really difficult to pick only 5 songs, and even now I'm not very sure that these 5 are the best ones. I could easily add 5 more... :)
Anyway, without further ado here's my Top-5 songlist for this week:
THIN LIZZY: Massacre (Johnny the Fox - 1976)
BLACK SABBATH: Heaven & Hell (Heaven & Hell - 1980)
THE ROLLING STONES: Stray cat blues (Beggar's Banquet - 1968)
HELLOWEEN: A tale that wasn't right (Keeper of the seven keys Part.1 - 1987)
MANFRED MAN'S EARTH BAND: The road to Babylon (The roaring  silence - 1976)
And as usual, I'll conclude this post by adding 2 videos with songs from my list, so you can listen to them if you want to.
I chose the songs 'Massacre' by Thin Lizzy, and 'A tale that wasn't right' by Helloween.
Enjoy the music people, and thanks for visiting. :)
Greetings!

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX Live in Greece (11-12/12/2014)

One of the most interesting bands of the last years will visit Greece for 2 concerts.
Crippled Black Phoenix will perform live in Thessaloniki on Thursday 11/12 at Eightball Club, and the next day (Friday 12/12) in Athens at Gagarin 205 live music space.
This is not the first time the band is coming to Greece, but it will be the first time I will see them live.
Is one of the bands I believe are really interesting, and that's why I can't wait!
(After the concert I will write a review here, together with the concert's setlist).
As for the tickets, they cost 18€ each, which is a rather cheap price.
Let's hope we will see a good performance.

Spotlights on: SALANDER

A few months ago I wasn't even aware that there is a band named 'Salander'. But since then many things happened, and here I am now writing a second post in my blog about them. But let's take it from the start:
During summer, Dave Smith (one of the two members) contacted me saying that he wanted to send me their 2 albums in order to write here a review, and maybe play a song or more, in the radio show Prog & Roll. I accepted of course, because I really like to learn about new bands, and further than that because I liked the way he approached me. He was very 'gentleman'.
He sent me their albums, which I didn't have time to listen for some time, because it was August and I was on holidays, but upon my return I decided to give them a try. Sometime ago I wrote a small review for their second album 'Stendec', which you can read here if you want: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2014/10/salander-stendec-2014.html
Now let's take a look at the band:
Salander consists of two members: Dave Curnow and Dave Smith. They have a rather different musical background, as Dave Curnow was more into Rock and Blues, while Dave Smith was mostly a fan of the Progressive Rock bands of the '70's. Somehow these differences in their musical preferences effected their sound (in a good way), giving a rather unique style to their music. The 2 musicians are work colleagues and friends, so they decided to collaborate in order to write some music for Curnow's big selection of poems and stories.
They started playing music together in 2013, and were recording their songs in Dave Smith's home studio. Slowly slowly they had a nice collection of songs, and decided to make an album. Their first effort was 'Crash course for dessert' which was kind of a concept album. After the album was recorded they decided to release it in Bandcamp for free, in order to see what will happen. They took some possitive feedback at start, followed by positive reviews from  music sites.
Encouraged by all that, they decided to continue writing music, and the result was 'Stendec' a few months later. Stendec is a more "mature" album and surely a more "Progressive" one. It contains longer and more complexed compositions, and it is my favorite among their two albums. It also includes maybe their finest synthetic moment, the song 'Zeitgeist'. Here I should mention that there is a 3rd album, which was recorded after 'Crash course', which includes 9 songs that were not included in the first album. The title is 'Don't worry I'm not going to hurt you'.
So, in a nutshell, if you are interested to find out about Salander's music, I would recommend to start with 'Stendec', and if you like their style and sound continue with the other two.
In order to get an idea, I'm adding here the video of 'Zeitgeirst'.
I hope you found this post interesting and informative.
Thank you for reading...

PROG & ROLL radio show on 23/11/2014. The full playlist...

Good morning all!
Last night we had one more Prog & Roll radio show as usual, and here I am today in order to inform you about the playlist.
It was a rather a mixed but good one I believe.
During the second part we did a small tribute in the Greek Prog music scene, and we played songs from 4 very good local bands.
For the end of the show we kept the epic 'No!' from Crippled Black Phoenix' latest album, but because some people asked for one more song we chose to play a great and classic one. And as far I understood from their reactions we did a very good choice!
Here you can check the whole playlist:

Part 1: PARADISE LOST: Embers fire / NIGHTWISH: Ever dream / WITHIN TEMPTATION: Frozen / FATES WARNING: Eye to eye / BLACK BONZO: Lady of the light.
Part. 2: CICCADA: A child in the mirror / WILL-O-THE-WISP: Silent thoughts - Elbereth / NO BRAIN CELL: Open field (Part.1) / VERBAL DELIRIUM: Sudden winter.
Part. 3: TRIUMVIRAT: The school of instant pain / EMERSON LAKE & PALMER: Tarkus (part.5 – Battlefield) / GENESIS: Lilywhite Lilith / FOCUS: Sylvia / FRUUPP: Elizabeth. Part. 4: PHIDEUX: The doctrine of eternal ice / BIG BIG TRAIN: Swan hunter / FRANK ZAPPA: Directly from my heart to you / CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX: No!.
Encore: LED ZEPPELIN: Since I’ve been loving you (Live).
I want to say a very big thanks to all of you who joined our show, hoping you had some nice time with our music choices.

PROG & ROLL radio show (16/11/2014): The full playlist & more..

Hello all!
One more Prog & Roll radio show was online last night, and here I am today in order to tell you how it went. Well, I believe that it was a really good show! We had many people listening during the show, and some of them were also chating in the chatbox. Once more we had both members of 'Salander', and as it seemed everybody enjoyed the songs we chose to play.
I don't want to brag about it, but I never heard of a radio show having an 'encore' before. And last night was the second time it happened in Prog & Roll. Near the end there were some people who were saying on the chatbox 'More more!', knowing of course that our show is the last one and there is no follow up. So, we made a last minute arrangement, and managed to keep the server open for a while. But the problem was, which song to play as last one? So we decided to make it more fun. We chose 3 songs, and let the people vote which one they wanted to listen. But because the result was almost a tie, we decided to play 2 songs finally. So everybody would be happy! :)
As for the playlist, it included songs from many different music genres, and as Grand Finale we kept a really magnificent song. 'The Song of Scheherazade' by Renaissance. Well, before we realized that we would have to make an encore of course. :)
Here you can see the whole playlist:

GLASS HAMMER: Farewell to Shadowlands / ELOY: Mysterious Monolith / NEKTAR: Do you believe in magic / STRING DRIVEN THING: Heartfeeder / THIN LIZZY: Black Rose / FISH: Internal Exile / STATUS QUO Feat. MADDY PRIOR: All Around my Hat / MIKE HERON: Don’t kill it Carol / MATTHEWS SOUTHERN COMFORT: Colorado Springs Eternal / STEVE WYNN: Black Magic / GREEN ON RED: Sixteen Ways / COLOSSEUM: Theme for an Imaginary Western / RARE EARTH: (I know) I’m losing you / THE ROLLING STONES: Sympathy for the Devil / CURVED AIR: Marie Antoinette / RENAISSANCE: Song of Scheherazade. ENCORE: STRAWBS: Tears and Pavan / RUSH: Jacob’s Ladder.
We want to thank all of you who logged in last night, and be sure we will always try to find ways to make our show a more fun and interesting one!
Thank you!

My channel on YouTube is facing problems...

Hello all!
I'm sorry to say that my channel on Youtube is facing some serious problems, therefore I'm not sure for how long it will remain open.
I really put lots of efforts in this channel, and I spend many hours trying to create something nice there, but after the bad news I received I have to admit that I stopped trying.
Almost 2 months ago, I uploaded a song by Supertramp, and a couple of days later I received a warning saying that it was illegal and the video was deleted. The message also informed me that if I get 2 more warnings my channel will shut down. Before 2 weeks I received a second warning for a song I uploaded 4-5 months ago, and as you can realise it is only a matter of time before I will receive the 3rd and final warning. I believe that this policy is totally stupid, because the only thing we are doing, is to advertise the bands and their songs. We don't get any profit or something of that short. (at least I don't). I'm doing it because I love music, and I believe that everybody should be able to discover songs or bands he don't know. I know many people (including myself), that discovered songs and bands they never heard off before, and bought their cd's or their songs from internet. So, why is this a bad thing?
Anyway, I wrote this post only to inform you about these problems. For the moment my channel is still open, and if you want go take a look. It contains almost 290 songs from many different music styles.
Further than that, if any of you had the same problems as me before, and know a way to deal with them, please inform me. Your help will be much appreciated!
Thank you very much!

Goodies from GFreedom's Music Collection # 17

MIDLAKE: The Courage of Others (2010)
Midlake is an American Folk-Rock band from Denton Texas, formed in 1999 by a group of Jazz students at the University of North Texas College of Music.
In their early days they were into Jazz/Funk music, but slowly slowly tried a musical turn to Rock, and a bit later to Folk-Rock. As it seems they are influenced by bands from totally different music styles, and maybe that is why their music is so appealing and interesting. Their discography consists of 4 studio albums so far, and each one of those albums has something different to offer.
'The courage of others' was their 3rd studio album and definetely the most Folk one. I discovered this album recently, and immediately fell in love with it.
The album includes 11 songs, and almost all of them are worth listening to. The music style is a rather melancholic Rock with many English Folk influences, wonderful melodies, and a singer who's voice fits perfectly in the style of the music. (I must say that I was really dissapointed when I found out that their singer left the band after this album).
The song that first caught my attention was the opening track 'Acts of Men' which is one of the album's highlights in my opinion. But as I discoverd very soon, there are many beautiful songs here and now it's different to point out which ones I love the most.
In order to help you understand how their music feels like, I can say that it would be perfect on a rainy day, sitting next to a fireplace with a glass of wine in your hand, looking out of the window the gloomy weather. (At least this is the picture in my mind).
There s a rather big selection of musical instruments that are being used in the album, such as: acoustic and electric guitar, bass, drums, piano, keyboards, flute, harpsicord, dulcimer etc...
Upon its release, the album received good critics in general, and it became known in the Progressive Rock and Folk Rock circles.
In 2014, the drummer of 'System of a Dawn' John Dolmayan noted that he was a passionate fan of the album, stating: 'The Courage of Others is phenomenal, and this is a band that I think could get up to that level of writing where they’re creating albums that just work every time'.
Closing this post I have to say that I recommed this album, not only to the fans of English Folk Rock, but to all those who enjoy listening to melodic Rock music, and melancholic/romatic tunes.
I' adding here a couple of videos for you to have an idea about Midlake's music.
I hope you found this post interesting and informative.
Thank you for reading! :-)

PROG & ROLL radio show (9/11/204): The full playlist & more...

Hello everybody!
Last night we had one more Prog & Roll radio show as usual, and here I am today writing down a few things about it. It was a nice show I believe judging from the people's reactions. During the first part we played songs from some very famous musicians, but this time we focused on their solo careers. During the second part we included a song recorded by 'Salander' which is a very special one for us. The reason? Because they recorded this song specialy for us & our dog named 'Bailey' who died almost 2 weeks ago. It was a very kind and thoughtful thing to do, and I want to thank them a lot for that!
At the start of the 3rd part we had a music contest once more, and at the 4rth part we played a song from the new Pink Floyd's album 'Endless River', (one day before the original release). We also included a live version of the song 'Berlin' by Barclay James Harvest, because yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Berlin Wall's demolition. And as usual, we concluded the show with the 'epic' song, which was the wonderful 'The turn of a friendly card' by The Alan Parsons Project.
I'm glad to say that slowly but steady our audience is growing, and we now have listeners from more countries, and that is something that makes us really happy. For example, last night we had peole listening from Greece, England, Ireland, Italy and Finland. (And I'm refering only to those who were chating with us, I don't know who else was listening and from where).
As for the songs we played, you can see the whole playlist here:
Part 1: ROBIN TROWER: Man of the World / FRANK ZAPPA: Dirty Love / LOU REED: Vicious / DAVID BOWIE: Watch that Man / ERIC CLAPTON: After Midnight / ROD STEWART: Reason to Believe.
Part 2: P.A.W.N: The Princess is out Tonight / HAGGARD: Lost (Robin’s Song) / SALANDER: For Bailey / GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT: In the Distance Fading / CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX: Rise up & Fight.
Part 3: SIMON & GARFUNKEL: America (Music contest) / P.A.W.N: Vessels / THERION: Liusalfheim /  TRANSATLANTIC: Black as the Sky.
Part 4: PFM: Celebration / BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST: Berlin (Live) / PINK FLOYD: Talkin’ Hawkin’ / THE ALAN PARSON’S PROJECT: The Turn of a Friendly Card.
I want to say a very big thanks to all of you who joined last night and listened, and especially to Dave & Dave from 'Salander' for the beautiful song they recorded for us. It was a very touchy moment. Thank you guys!
